About this artwork

This Japanese woodblock print shows pink and red peonies with dark green leaves, set against a pale orange ground. A butterfly hovers among the flowers, and the artist's signature and seal appear at the lower left. The deep greens give the blooms a strong outline, while the warm background keeps the whole scene gentle and open. Hokusai was an Edo-period ukiyo-e artist who turned his attention to plants and animals as well as people and landscapes, and this print belongs to that tradition of close attention to the natural world. Impressions of it are held in the Japanese print collection of Centre Céramique in Maastricht.

On your wall: Its warm pinks, greens and soft orange suit a calm living room, bedroom or hallway, and sit well beside natural wood or neutral walls.
