Springtime in Enoshima is a colour woodblock print made by Katsushika Hokusai in 1797. It belongs to the ukiyo-e tradition of the Edo period, in which Hokusai worked as both painter and printmaker. The title places us at Enoshima in spring, and the print is grouped with other images of Enoshima where Mount Fuji appears in the view. Hokusai helped widen ukiyo-e beyond portraits of courtesans and actors to take in landscapes, plants and animals, and this print belongs to that interest in place and season.
On your wall: Its seasonal, landscape subject suits calm living rooms, hallways and studies, especially where a quiet touch of Japanese art is welcome.
