Pierre-Joseph Redouté, a painter and botanist known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers, is the artist behind this study of the cabbage rose, Rosa centifolia, also called Rosier à cent feuilles. The image is a printed botanical plate, and its lettering credits Redouté for the painting, Couten for the engraving and the Imprimerie de Remond for the printing. A pink bloom sits at the centre, with buds and leaves beside it. The original was a watercolour, and the plate shows how his flower paintings reached a wider audience through printing.
On your wall: Its soft pink and green suit a bedroom, a dining room or a quiet hallway, and it sits well in a study or beside other botanical prints.
