Rosa inermis, or the Thornless Rose, was painted by Pierre-Joseph Redouté and etched by Charles Lemaire. It dates from 1817 and belongs to Redouté's Les Roses, a series of botanical illustrations devoted to the flower. The plate is a painted engraving, so it joins careful printmaking with colour added to the image. It is also associated with the rose 'Impératrice Joséphine'. Redouté was a painter and botanist from the Austrian Netherlands, admired for his flower watercolours, many of which were published as large coloured stipple engravings.
On your wall: It suits studies, dining rooms, hallways and bedrooms, wherever a calm botanical picture of a single rose would sit well among traditional or softly decorated furnishings.
