About this artwork

This botanical plate shows a red Gallic rose, the flower open beside its buds and set among leaves. The caption reads 'Rosa Gallica Pontiana', and the plate carries two signatures: P. J. Redouté as the painter, and Bessin as the engraver. That tells us the image was reproduced as a print from Redouté's watercolour. Redouté was a painter and botanist, best known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers, many of which were published as coloured stipple engravings. Here the rose is the whole subject, shown plainly so that its form and colour can be studied closely.

On your wall: Its red bloom and fine botanical detail suit a study, dining room, hallway or bedroom, especially where a quiet, classic touch of colour is wanted.
