This photograph shows the Fontaine de Charonne, also known as the fontaine Trogneux, at the corner of rue de Charonne and 61 rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine in Paris's 11th arrondissement. It is a print on albumen paper, made by Eugène Atget at some point between 1885 and 1925, and mounted on a larger board. A period inscription calls it the fountain of Montreuil, a reminder that the same spot has been known by more than one name. Atget set out to record the streets and architecture of Paris, and this view belongs to that work. The image is a plain, attentive record of a corner of the city.
On your wall: Its black and white tones and its Parisian street subject suit a study, hallway or living room, particularly alongside other architectural or city-themed pictures.

Eugène Atget was a French photographer and self-styled flâneur who set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation swept them away. He sold his pictures to artists and craftspeople, and later inspired the surrealists. Berenice Abbott first published most of his photographs after his death, when his reputation began to grow.
