This is Plate 197 from John James Audubon's The Birds of America, shown as a hand-coloured engraved plate. Several American crossbills perch on hemlock branches hung with cones. The birds are painted in reds, oranges and greens, set against the darker needles and the cones. The plate is numbered 40 in the series and carries the caption naming the bird as Loxia curvirostra. Audubon planned the book as a pictorial record of North American birds, and its plates were engraved in Scotland and England between 1827 and 1838.
On your wall: The warm reds and soft greens suit a study, hallway or sitting room, and sit well alongside natural wood, books and other botanical or nature prints.
