Basilius Besler, 1613
Five buttercup plants, roots and all, set out on a single hand-coloured plate from Basilius Besler's celebrated botanical book of 1613.

This plate comes from the Hortus Eystettensis of 1613, in the lavish edition known as the Fürstenausgabe. It shows five Ranunculus plants, each drawn with its roots and named by an engraved Latin caption. The image is an engraving that has been coloured by hand, so the line work of the print and the colour added afterwards work together. Basilius Besler, a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, is best known for this large florilegium. The plate is laid out like a study, inviting you to compare one plant with the next.
On your wall: Its orderly botanical arrangement and hand-coloured detail suit a study, hallway, kitchen or dining room, and sit well alongside other floral or natural history prints.
