About this artwork

This is Rosa centifolia Burgundiaca, also given the French name Le Cent-feuilles de Bordeaux, a plate from the third volume of Pierre-Joseph Redouté's Les Roses. The work is dated 1824 and belongs to the Rosa centifolia group of botanical illustrations, the cabbage roses. Redouté was a painter and botanist from the Austrian Netherlands, best known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers. Many of his images were published as large coloured stipple engravings. He was nicknamed "the Raphael of flowers", and his botanical work is still held in very high regard.

On your wall: A rose study like this suits a quiet corner of a living room, a bedroom or a hallway, and sits well alongside other botanical prints.
