This plate from Basilius Besler's Hortus Eystettensis of 1613 shows two tulip plants in full, from flower down to bulb and roots. One bloom is yellow-orange with speckled markings, the other a clear red. Each plant carries a Latin label. The plate is a hand-coloured engraving, so the fine linework of the print is lifted by colour added by hand. The image comes from the 'Fürstenausgabe', the specially coloured edition of the book, in a copy held at the Seminarbibliothek Eichstätt. Besler was a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, and the Hortus Eystettensis is his best-known work.
On your wall: The warm yellow-orange and red against pale paper suit a kitchen, dining room, hallway or study, especially where a botanical touch is wanted.
