This plate comes from the Hortus Eystettensis of 1613, and shows three branches of citrus carrying both fruit and blossom. Each is labelled in Latin: Mala Medica seu Citria, Poma Aurantia nana dicta and Poma Aurantia. It is an engraving that has been coloured by hand, so the fruit and leaves are picked out in careful, natural tones. The plate belongs to the special coloured edition of the book, known as the Fürstenausgabe. Basilius Besler, a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, is best known for this large florilegium.
On your wall: Its fresh citrus fruit and foliage suit kitchens, dining rooms, hallways and studies, especially where a calm, botanical touch is wanted.
