Paul Signac painted this work in 1899, and its title places us on the Seine at Grenelle. It is an oil painting on canvas, and the river is the subject. Signac was a French Neo-Impressionist who, together with Georges Seurat, helped develop Pointillism. The painting belongs to the Sigurd Frosterus Collection at the Amos Rex. Since the title names a particular stretch of the Seine, a viewer can expect a river scene rather than a studio subject or a portrait.
On your wall: A river view like this suits living rooms, studies and hallways, where it adds a calm sense of open water and air.

Text based on Amos Rex.
Paul Signac was a French painter associated with Neo-Impressionism. Working alongside Georges Seurat, he helped develop Pointillism, a technique in which a picture is built from small, separate touches of colour. His name is closely linked with that approach, and it remains the reason his work is so often discussed today.
