This 1817 engraving shows the Kamtschatka rose, Rosa kamtschatica, in the careful manner of botanical illustration. It was engraved by Chapuy after a design by Pierre-Joseph Redouté and belongs to Les Roses, his well-known series of rose portraits. The plate is a stipple engraving, a technique in which an image is built up from many tiny dots rather than continuous lines. Redouté was a painter and botanist, admired for his flower studies, and this plate reflects that close attention to the character of a single plant.

Pierre-Joseph Redouté was a painter and botanist from the Austrian Netherlands. He is best known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers, painted at the Château de Malmaison. Many were published as large coloured stipple engravings. Admirers nicknamed him "the Raphael of flowers", and he has often been ranked among the finest botanical illustrators.
