This plate comes from the Hortus Eystettensis, published in 1613, the monumental florilegium by Nuremberg apothecary and botanist Basilius Besler. It is a hand-coloured engraving showing an orange daylily, labelled 'Lilium fatuum', alongside a yellow-flowered plant labelled 'Dorea Narbonensium'. Each plant is drawn with its own name beside it, in the manner of a botanical reference. The plate belongs to the so-called Fürstenausgabe, the coloured edition of the book, and the original page is held in the Seminarbibliothek Eichstätt.
On your wall: Its warm orange and yellow blooms on a pale page suit a kitchen, hallway, study or dining room, especially where a botanical or traditional look is wanted.
