About this artwork

Made in 1834, this print by Katsushika Hokusai shows a Java sparrow perched on a branch of white magnolia. The pale blossoms stand out against dark leaves, and the bird sits calmly among them. Calligraphic inscriptions, the artist's signature and seals share the composition with the image. It belongs to the Japanese tradition of bird-and-flower pictures and was made as a colour woodblock print, known as nishiki-e, within the ukiyo-e genre. Hokusai is best known for his landscapes, yet he turned his attention to plants and animals as well.

On your wall: The soft whites and dark greens suit calm spaces such as a bedroom, study, hallway or reading corner, and sit well beside natural wood and neutral walls.
